Iberdrola Group has launched the Startup Challenge Street Lighting & Cabling Detection, an international call for companies to present solutions that autonomously detect and validate public lighting points and cabling that are not recorded in the company’s database.

What is the Challenge about?

Why

In some cases, even before a new allotment, light bulbs are already installed without being registered in the Iberdrola Database. Likewise, telephone and pay-TV cables from telecom operators are installed by default on the distributor's posts without the distributor receiving the appropriate sharing fees.

What

Iberdrola is looking for solutions to help update the database regularly and quickly by means of computer software, in order to improve infrastructure maintenance and reduce network energy losses. For example, via proposals that autonomously detect public lighting points and validates them using technologies such as deep learning, e.g. geotagging, object detection (CNNs), and more.

The Requirements

The detection method should use external databases, as well as data and georeferencing of the company's street lights. The images or data used for identification must be updated regularly, the process must be automatic and work with hardly any human intervention. It must meet the criteria of efficiency, serviceability, scalability, and reproducibility.

Where

This situation is recurrent in Brazil, within the states of Sao Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Bahia, Pernambuco, and Rio Grande do Norte, which is why the winning solution will be tested there. However, it may also be used in other regions and for other of the group's assets.

What solutions are you looking for with the Street Lighting & Cabling Detection Challenge?

Iberdrola is looking for solutions to help update the database regularly and quickly by means of computer software, in order to improve infrastructure maintenance and reduce network energy losses. For example, via proposals that autonomously detect public lighting points and validates them using technologies such as deep learning, e.g. geotagging, object detection (CNNs), and more.

Your detection method should:

• Use external databases, as well as data and georeferencing of the Iberdrola's street lights.
• The images or data used for identification must be updated regularly.
• The process must be automatic and work with hardly any human intervention.
• It must meet the criteria of efficiency, serviceability, scalability, and reproducibility.

What type of street lights are installed? LEDs, sodium, other?

In general, the types of street lights already installed, which Iberdrola does need to detect too, are sodium or high-pressure sodium vapor (88%), metallic bulb (9%), mercury vapor (1%) and others (fluorescent compact, halogen and LED – 2%).

When new lights are installed, LEDs are preferred. However, it depends on the local availability and on its cost.

How often should the information be updated?

The more frequent, the better. Real-time detection of new bulbs installed would be ideal. However, a monthly update is also reasonable.

Can I submit more than one proposal?

You are welcome to submit more than one proposal, just make sure to submit a separate application for each.

What are the Challenge's key benefits for my company or entity?

What do I need to know about the Pilot Project?

The winner of the challenge will sign a collaboration and testing agreement with Iberdrola and/or any other relevant company of the Iberdrola Group.

Iberdrola and/or the relevant company will:

• bear the costs of such collaboration and testing activities
• provide the technical support to test the solution proposed, granting access to equipment, teams, infrastructures, high-tech locations, and co-working areas
• provide a real environment and data to test the solution
